Blood transfusions are a critical part of everyday life and assist in saving countless lives each year. Blood transfusion service is a vital component of hospital services.The Department of Transfusion in NIMS Medicity provides blood support to the patients. It collect blood from voluntary and replacement donors only. Strict donor selection criteria is followed by the hospital to ensure good health to the donor and good quality blood. Keeping in mind the criticality of this function ,NIMS medicity has adopted following strategies to ensure maximum efficiency of this department.

        Reduction of unnecessary blood transfusion, 100% use of components so as to save blood and use every component as and when required.
     
        Elimination of transfusion transmitted diseases and transfusion of safe blood. To maintain quality of blood and blood products, voluntary donors are taken. In private blood banks, where blood donation camp is not permitted by Government of India, the immediate family members are considered as replacement donors.

         Apart from carrying out all mandatory tests (VDRL, Malaria, HIV I&II, Hep:Bs Antigen and Hept:C virus (HCV) as laid down by the Drug Controller of India for licensed Blood Banks, NIMS Medicity also conducts Hepatitis B core Antibody (Ani HBc Ab IgM + IgG) on every unit of blood to make the blood safer for transfusion.

These tests are conducted on the latest AXSYM Automatic Machine from Abbot, USA. NIMS Medicity conducts Micro-particle Enzyme Immuno Assay (MEIA) on every unit of blood for HIV I&II, HBs Ag, Abtu GV cire Av & HCV Ab for screening of blood donors. MEIA method is preferred over EliSA method for following reasons -

Blood Bank

NIMS Medicity comes with blood bank facilities and services for the patients .It is a unit that performs the collection,processing, storage and distribution of human blood or blood products. Blood bank is maintained by a qualified pathologist and technical staff providing 24 hrs of services for the patient’s preoperative, intra operative and post operative needs of blood .It has a vast array of state of the art equipment for its smooth functioning, which include: Deep Freezers which maintain temperatures of -30 C and -80 C, heavy duty Refrigerated Centrifuge for the separation of components at different speeds, Platelet Agitators, Cryobath, Tube Sealers and Blood Collection Monitors. Our blood bank is a cache or bank of blood or blood components, gathered for the purpose of blood donation, stored and preserved for later use in blood transfusion. This includes compatibility testing for transfusion and may include blood donation processing, depending on the capabilities of the facility. Blood Bank at NIMS Medicity is a modern up-to-date facility offering advanced Blood Component Therapy. We also perform testing to determine the blood type of patients and to identify compatible blood products for blood transfusions, along with a battery of tests and treatments to ensure and enhance quality.
