HAR GOBIND KHORANA BIOTECHNOLOGY FINISHING SCHOOL

Biotechnology Finishing School is a novel programme jointly initiated by Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education (NICHE) and Noorul Islam Institute of Medical Science and Research Foundation (NIMS).

 

Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education (NICHE- Deemed University) has completed 63 years of service in Education. It is a private co-educational University located in Kanyakumari District, in South Tamilnadu. The University provides higher education and training leading to excellence and innovation in such branches of learning such as Engineering and Technology, Management, Applied Sciences, Humanities, Arts, Commerce, Social Science, Medical Sciences, Dental Science, Para-Medical Sciences etc.  The university has already established itself as a hub for intensive research with firm inter-disciplinary orientation and linkages for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge.

 

NIMS Medicity is a 350 bedded Super specialty Hospital, Neyyattinkara, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala state is one of the largest healthcare centers in South Kerala and South Tamilnadu. Its 40 departments include 20 specialties and 20 Super Specialities. Human Genetics and Molecular biology Laboratory with state of art equipments and instruments needed for advanced diagnostics and research is latest addition to the facilities at NIMS Medicity. Civil service academy, College of Dental Sciences, College of Nursing and Paramedical sciences are also situated at the NIMS Medicity campus. NIMS constantly strives to adopt an innovative approach to ever changing advances in the field of Medical care.

 

The Human Genetics and Molecular biology laboratory at NIMS Medicity, Department of Biomedical Sciences and Technology at Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education (NICHE) and Nanotechnology Department at Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education (NICHE) will be collaboratively involving in the Finishing school programme.

 

NEED FOR BIOTECHNOLOGY FINISHING SCHOOL

Biotechnology is a hot spot sector in life sciences both in academia and industry. It is a frontier of science offering enormous possibilities of its use as a premium precision tool for the welfare of society and creation of wealth for sustainable commercial and socio-economical development.  Indian Biotechnology industry which ranks among the top ten biotech hubs of the world.  The biotechnology industry is intensively research based sector and many global biotechnology players have demonstrated an increasing interest in collaborating with Indian companies. Biotechnology draws on expertise from a number of scientific fields such as Molecular and Cell Biology, Botany, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering and Chemistry. Its application in health, agriculture and energy sectors have been path breaking and yielded significant results.

 

Biotechnology sector is said to be facing an unbelievable 80 per cent shortage of trained and qualified manpower. One of the major complaints of all biotech companies is that there is considerable skill deficit observed in students graduated in biotechnology. Indian biotech sector continues to face acute shortage of specialists. The arrival of new technologies and fast changing applications has only widened the gap between the academic initiates and industry wants. It is pertinent for students and researchers to gain hands-on experience in multitude of industry oriented techniques and guided to get started immediately for an ideal career in Biotech industry.

Eligibility

B.Sc/ M.Sc in Biotechnology /Life Sciences / B.Pharm/ M.Pharm /M.B.B.S/Agriculture or veterinary Sciences

B.E/ B.Tech in biotechnology /Chemical engineering

 

The candidates should have at least 50% marks in any of the above degrees.

Mode of training

The training will consist of lectures delivered by competent resource persons,  practical demonstrations and field visits.

Examinations 

There will be written examinations at the end of the course.

  • To provide students hands on training at the Human Genetics and Molecular biology laboratory at NIMS Medicity, Department of Biomedical Sciences and Technology at Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education(NICHE) and Nanotechnology Department at Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education (NICHE).
